  76. 1.1 About File Manager StepUp
  77. -----------------------------

  79. File Manager StepUp (or, for short, FM StepUp) is a utility that
  80. dramatically improves File Manager. Instead of replacing File
  81. Manager, FM StepUp simply makes it better. When you install FM
  82. StepUp, additional commands are added to File Manager's menus,
  83. and existing commands are enhanced.

  147. 1.2. What's new in this version :
  148. ----------------------------------
  149.  
  150. -  the ability to add buttons for commands 'New File', 'View File', and
  151.    'Edit File' to the File Manager toolbar (native or Chaosoft's one)
  152.    is implemented;
  153.  
  154. -  functionality of the Execute Menu is extended:
  155.  
  156.    -  internal DOS commands (like DIR) can now be added to the
  157.       Execute Menu;
  158.  
  159.    -  the ability to perform a command from Execute Menu for a
  160.       number of currently selected files is implemented;
  161.  
  162.    -  the 'Print DIR' and 'Print TREE' commands are added to the
  163.       default set of the Execute Menu commands;

  165.       NOTE: if you have already customized Execute menu, you
  166.       may add these commands to it manually. Close File Manager,
  167.       open file FMSTEPUP.INI for editing (using Windows Notepad,
  168.       for instance), find section [ExecMenu] and add the following
  169.       two lines to the list of commands:

  171.          Print DI&R=DIR /O:N > PRN
  172.          Print &TREE=TREE /A > PRN
  173.  
  174.       Save the file and run File Manager.
  175.  
  176.    -  the capacity of the Execute Menu is increased: it can hold
  177.       up to 30 commands now;

  179. -  additional special character combinations to be recognized in a
  180.    command line template are introduced:

  182.         .! - represents an extension of a file, including a dot;
  183.  
  184.         ,! - represents an extension of a file, without the dot;

  186. -  DOS 'Verify on/off' mode is now restored in its original state
  187.    after closing File Manager;

  189. -  the 'Total Size' command can now be used to calculate total
  190.    size of multiple directories, simultaneously highlighted in the
  191.    Directory window;

  199. -  the 'Delete' dialog box is NO LONGER updated by FM StepUp (since
  200.    I'm tired answering question "what's that history list for?" :-);

  202. -  FM StepUp is no longer privides a FULL set of [Restrictions]
  203.    for File Manager. A separate utility, FM Guard, is specifically
  204.    designed to perform this task and is available from ChaoSoft.

  261. other now.

  263. 1.3 How to use the documentation
  264. --------------------------------

  266. Complete information about FM StepUp, including installation
  267. procedure, how to get updates, how to register your copy,
  268. troubleshooting hints, answers to frequently asked questions,
  269. etc., is available in the Windows Help format, file FMSTEPUP.HLP.
  270.  
  271. If you have already installed FM StepUp, access the information by
  272. choosing StepUp | Help from File Manager's menu.
  273.  
  274. Or, double click the 'FM StepUp Help' icon in the FMStepUp group
  275. created for Program Manager after automatic installation.
  276.  
  277. Or, choose command 'Run' from Program Manager or File Manager main
  278. menu, and enter the full name (including complete path) of the
  279. FMSTEPUP.HLP file. For example, if you have placed the FM StepUp
  280. files into directory C:\TEMP on your hard disk, enter the following
  281. string in the 'Run' dialog box:

  285. and click OK button.

  287. Yet another way to view the file is to open the directory window
  288. with the File Manager and double click filename FMSTEPUP.HLP with
  289. the mouse.

  321. unique registration code which can be used to suppress the
  322. registration reminder screen.

  348. You may register your copy of FM StepUp with a check or Eurocheck,

  382. //      2. INSTALLING File Manager StepUp
  383. //

  386. Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a
  387. stand-alone program; there is no special executable file you would
  388. run to start the FM StepUp. To use FM StepUp, all you need is to
  389. properly install it, and it will run automatically every time you
  390. run File Manager.
  391.  
  392. 2.1. Using Setup utility
  393. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  394. FM StepUp comes with convenient and flexible SETUP utility. Use
  395. SETUP when you want to temporarily activate/deactivate the
  396. software or install it onto your hard disk or network drive for
  397. permament use.
  398.  
  399. 2.1.1. HOW TO QUICKLY TRY OUT THE SOFTWARE
  400. ------------------------------------------
  401.  
  402. If you obtained FM StepUp on a diskette or CD-ROM and want to take
  403. a look at the utility without installing it onto your hard disk,
  404. run SETUP.EXE from the FMSTEPUP directory on the diskette or
  405. CD-ROM and choose the 'Activate' button when prompted.
  406.  
  407.   - to run SETUP.EXE, choose File | Run from main menu of Program
  408.     Manager or File Manager and type into the 'Run' dialog box:
  409.  
  410.         A:\FMSTEPUP\SETUP.EXE
  411.  
  412.     (assuming that the diskette is inserted into the 'A' floppy
  413.     drive)
  414.  
  415. After that run File Manager. You should see a new item in the main
  416. menu, StepUp (if there is no such an item, FM StepUp has not been
  417. activated; see information below for possible reasons) Of course,
  418. be sure that the diskette or CD with FM StepUp is available during
  419. the loading of the File Manager!
  420.  
  421. Try this:
  422.  
  423. - place the mouse cursor in a File Manager window and click with the
  424.   right button. The Quick Menu should pop up with a number of
  425.   choices; try some of them.
  426.  
  427. - open StepUp submenu and choose Special; try commands from it;
  428.  
  429. - open standard dialog boxes of the File Manager: Run, Copy, Move,
  430.   etc. Do they look better with 3D effects? Are the history lists
  431.   next to the editable fields handy?
  432.  
  433. - choose StepUp | Preferences: what do you want to customize? Try
  434.   buttons: Dialogs; Quick Menu; Execute Menu; try to change the
  435.   menu name 'StepUp' to something else.
  436.  
  437. Now, if you see that FM StepUp is not what you need, run SETUP.EXE
  438. and choose the 'Deactivate' button. In addition, to completely clean
  439. your system up, you should delete the FMSTEPUP.INI file from your
  440. WINDOWS directory.
  441.  
  442. On the other hand, if you want to give the program a longer trial
  443. and wish to install it onto your hard disk or network drive,
  444. choose the 'Install' button when SETUP.EXE prompts you. Please see
  445. the next section for more information.
  446.  
  447. 2.1.2. Installing on a hard disk or network drive
  448. -------------------------------------------------
  449.  
  450. If you have already copied all the files from the FM StepUp
  451. package onto your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the
  452. files from an archive), run SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Activate'
  453. button.
  454.  
  455. If you don't have the FM StepUp files on the hard disk, choose
  456. the 'Install' instead. Then enter the path to the directory
  457. where you want FM StepUp to be installed. In this case, SETUP.EXE
  458. will copy all the files to the new location and then activate them. In
  459. addition, you will be prompted to create a separate program group
  460. for FM StepUp. It's not essential to have such a group, but it may
  461. be convenient. In any case, the last word is yours!
  462.  
  463. 2.1.3. Uninstalling FM StepUp
  464. -----------------------------
  465.  
  466. To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM StepUp, run
  467. SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Deactivate' button. If you decide to
  468. start using FM StepUp later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose
  469. 'Activate'.
  470.  
  471. Otherwise, to completely remove FM StepUp from your system,
  472. deactivate it with the SETUP.EXE utility (see above) and remove
  473. all the files from the directory on your hard disk or network
  474. drive where you have installed FM StepUp. In addition, erase file
  475. FMSTEPUP.INI from your WINDOWS directory, and delete program group
  476. 'FMStepUp' from the Program Manager, if you created it during
  477. installation.
  478.  
  479. 2.2. Registering your copy of FM StepUp
  480. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  481. Sometimes, FM StepUp displays a registration reminder, and the
  482. 'About FM StepUp' screen reads 'Unregistered copy'. If you have
  483. registered FM StepUp and obtained your personal Registration Code
  484. from us, you may use it to remove the registration reminder from
  485. the screen and enter your name in the 'About FM StepUp' screen.
  486. Choose 'Register' from the StepUp menu of File Manager and when
  487. the dialog box pops up, enter your name (exactly as it appears in
  488. your Registration Acknowledgment) and the Registration Code.
  489.  
  490. Be sure to enter your name EXACTLY as it's written in the
  491. Registration Acknowledgment, including all the spaces, punctuation,
  492. and entering letters in proper case (upper or lower). If you wish
  493. your name to be spelled differently please let us know and we will
  494. assign a new registraion number.
  495.  
  496. 2.3. Manual installation/deinstallation
  497. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  498. If the automatic installation fails for any reason, you may install
  499. the FM StepUp manually:
  500.  
  501. 1. Create a directory for FM StepUp on your hard disk, say
  502.    C:\FMSTEPUP, and copy all the files from the FM StepUp
  503.    installation disk into that directory. If you obtained the FM
  504.    StepUp files compressed in an archive, extract all the files
  505.    from it.
  506.  
  507. 2. Close File Manager.
  508.  
  509. 3. Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other
  510.    text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS directory on
  511.    your hard disk (or the directory you specified when installing
  512.    Windows). Please note: the file you need is WINFILE.INI, not
  513.    WIN.INI.
  514.  
  515.    Find the section [AddOns] in this file and enter the following
  516.    line right after the string [AddOns]:
  517.  
  518.         FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  519.  
  520.    (or specify the directory you copied FM StepUp's files into,
  521.    if other than FMSTEPUP).
  522.  
  523.    The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like
  524.    this:
  525.  
  526.         ...
  527.         [AddOns]
  528.         FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  529.         ...
  530.  
  531.    (... means other lines of the file). Save the file.
  532.  
  533. 5. Run File Manager.
  534.  
  535. If the installation has been completed successfully, you should
  536. see a new menu item, 'StepUp', among the other items of the File
  537. Manager's main menu. If you don't see the 'StepUp' item in the
  538. main menu of File Manager, an error has occurred. Please verify
  539. that you have done all the steps above, and, in particular,
  540. specified the correct path in the [AddOns] section of the
  541. WINFILE.INI file. Also, make sure that the files have not been
  542. corrupted when they were copied onto your hard disk (Each file
  543. should be the same size as each file on the installation diskette)
  544.  
  545. To manually uninstall FM STEPUP:
  546.  
  547. 1. Close File Manager and remove the line 'FM StepUp=...' from the
  548.    WINFILE.INI file (using Notepad, for example). After that, when
  549.    you restart File Manager, FM StepUp will not be loaded. If you
  550.    decide later to start using FM StepUp again, enter the line 'FM
  551.    StepUp=...' specifying the complete DOS path to FMSTEPUP.DLL
  552.    file, in the [AddOn] section of the WINFILE.INI file.
  553.  
  554. The following steps should be completed only if you wish to
  555. remove the FM StepUp from your system permanently:
  556.  
  557. 2. Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk where
  558.    you installed FM StepUp;
  559.  
  560. 3. Delete file FMSTEPUP.INI from the WINDOWS directory;
  561.  
  562. 4. Delete program group 'FMStepUp' in the Program manager window,
  563.    if there is one.
  564.  
  565. We hope you'll change your mind!
  566.  
  567. 2.3. A note about [Restrictions] for File Manager
  568. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  569.  
  570. If you are a system administrator, you may find that FM StepUp
  571. gives too much power to Windows users. That's why we made FM
  572. StepUp able to restrict itself. With the FM StepUp you can also
  573. restrict the user's access to some of the features of the File
  574. Manager in the same way as you can do it for Program Manager.
  575.  
  576.   NOTE: FM StepUp is not intended to provide a comprehensive set
  577.   of [Restrictions] for File Manager. A separate utility, FM
  578.   Guard, specifically designed for that purpose, is available from
  579.   Chaosoft. It allows one to disable any command of File Manager,
